When is a magazine not a magazine? When it has been turned into a bowl by Middlewich based artist Kylie Coles

Recycling has become second nature these days but Kylie Coles has developed a stunning way to give old magazines a new life. The magazine you are holding now could be transformed into an eye-catching and artistic feature in your home.

Mum-of-three Kylie has created a range of bowls made, in painstaking fashion, out of a wooden base and layer upon layer of old magazine and newspaper pages.

It started by accident really, said Kylie, 42. In the first year of my degree in contemporary crafts I was more interested in working with metal, but this developed as I experimented and I went along with what interested me.

She graduated last year and each piece she creates at her Sandbach workshop starts as a three inch thick circular wooden block onto which Kylie glues layers of magazine pages. It takes maybe 15 or 20 layers and then I mount it on the lathe and turn it.

The results are these colourful creations which were shown at a graduates fair in London and at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair in Manchester.

Kylie also creates pieces using ply board and hand dyed veneer layers and she is now hoping to expand her range to include wall-mounted pieces.
