He played a wife-killing bad boy and she played the wife of a love-rat doctor. But now former Brookside stars Steven Pinder and Stephanie Chambers have swapped life on The Close for family life in Chester.

When Stephanie Chambers started on Brookside her friends weren't jealous of the job, they were more envious of who she'd be working with.

'You'd think that they would be thinking about all the different stars I'd be working with day-to-day,' said Stephanie, who played wronged wife Gabby Parr. 'But they were far more interested in the fact that I would be on-set with one particular character, Max Farnham. They all really fancied him and were jealous I'd be working with him.'

Stephanie's friends could be rather rosy-cheeked now because when they go to her house for dinner the 38-year-old is now engaged and has a beautiful baby girl, Scarlett Rose, with Steven Pinder, the actor who played the Brookside wife murderer.

The couple live in the rural idyll of one Chester's pretty outlying villages. Steven, 49, is still busy at theatres up and down the country, including the local Theatre Clwyd. But Stephanie gave up acting during pregnancy after it became too difficult to travel to and from London every week for auditions.

Stephanie, who moved to the Chester area after meeting Steven while filming for Brookside, has had a mixed career. She started her career as a dancer travelling the world on cruise ships and has appeared in BBC shows Doctors and New Tricks as well as ITV's Emmerdale.

She also appeared in the horror film Seed of Chucky. 'They really wanted an English family for a dream sequence right at the start of the film. I was only it in for five minutes but it was brilliant,' giggled Stephanie.

'I remember going to the premiere in LA. It was absolutely fantastic. It was something I'd always wanted to do. We went for a party at Jennifer Tilley's house afterwards and it was incredible. I had a fantastic time with my dancing and acting but it was too difficult trying to carry that on with Scarlett Rose. I'm lucky because I got to try lots of different things and see some amazing places.'

Today, Stephanie is living a quieter but just as happy life in Chester with Steven and Scarlett Rose, who will be two this month. She has recently started Kindermusik classes for babies between 0-18 months and toddlers from 18-30 months.

The sessions, which she holds in Hoole and Flint in North Wales, are an American concept which use music and movement to improve learning and language skills.

She said: 'I didn't want to give up work completely. My friend was already doing these classes and I just loved the idea. Scarlett Rose goes to some of the classes too, she loves it. It's great to be able to do something with my little girl. I'm very lucky.'

For Stephanie and Steven, their lives couldn't get any better. When they get a break from work and parenthood they like to spend an evening at Oddfellows in Chester city centre but spend most of their time with Scarlett Rose.

'We just love living in Chester. It is such a lovely place to be. There is plenty of space for Scarlett Rose to play and enjoy herself and we live in one of the loveliest villages.

'I've travelled the world and seen some amazing places but I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be than here in Chester.'
