TV presenter and actress Terri Dwyer has gone from Hollyoaks wild child to doting mother. Emma Mayoh caught up with her in Heswall
When Terri Dwyer arrives she is in a whirlwind. She bursts through the door of the Jug and Bottle apologising for being just a few minutes late and asking us to excuse her appearance because she has no make-up on. The fact is, the mother of two, who regularly visits this Heswall tapas restaurant, is flawless. She looks younger then her 36 years, has cheekbones to die for and Id challenge you to find a wrinkle on her lightly sun-kissed face.
The former Loose Women and 60 Minute Makeover star her contract wasnt renewed on the latter as part of ITVs cuts last year - launches into telling us about her 15-week old son, Kylan, and four-year-old Caiden, while she carefully applies Clarins make-up on top of her creamy complexion. She chatters about life with her new arrival, her satisfaction at being able to get back into the gym following childbirth as well as what shes been doing recently.
If ever there was an advert for positive mental attitude, Terri would be it. The former Hollyoaks actress has had more than her fill of grief and trauma. Both her parents died from cancer before she hit her mid-twenties and she almost lost her own life in a car crash when she was 17.
But Terri, who started out as a model working on campaigns for Marks and Spencer as well as Charnos and Gossard lingerie, has not allowed her past to affect her future.
She said: I didnt get over my parents deaths very quickly, my dads death in particular because it meant that I was an orphan. It was a horrible thing for all of my family to go through. But Ive always been quite good at finding some good out of a bad situation.
I was really lucky too. I got on with my parents extremely well and we had a very happy family life. I have some friends who have never felt that close to their parents. I had a wonderful relationship with them both.
Terri, who moved to Wirral when she joined the original cast of Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, admits being orphaned was difficult to deal with but the experience has thrown her, wholeheartedly, into motherhood. As Kylan sits gurgling away and watching his animated mother, it is clear Terri takes her maternal responsibilities very seriously.
With money she and her siblings received from the sale of her parents home, she bought a house in Pescara, Italy. She admits it is no sprawling villa, but says it is ideal for her children and husband (former Radio city managing director, Sean) to spend some quality time.
Its been a real labour of love, she said. I come back to England, work really hard and then go to Italy and spend all the money I have earned on the house. When my parents died I wanted to invest in something that I could pass onto my children.
Also, Caiden is four and he knows his way around a computer. In Italy, he goes out with the neighbour watching their chickens hatch eggs and he was helping us pick vegetables. Its so different for them and its a place that reminds me of my parents.
Terri is now hoping to launch her own series of childrens books. Although she wont reveal what her ideas are, she is determined to succeed.
She said: I sent it off to one publisher and they said no, but, as weird as it sounds, it was a really positive no. It would be fantastic to get published. But its not the end of the world if it doesnt happen. At worst, I will have a selection of books written especially for Kylan.
When asked about her old wild child days she rolls her eyes and giggles. Dont even mention the time her Hollyoaks mates played a prank on her in Will Mellors dressing room. But now she has a very sensible approach.
Although originally from Leicestershire, Terri loves the home she has made with her family in Wirral.
Its lovely here. I live on the Wirral but its not far from Chester. We love going to Liverpool and our friends run Alma de Cuba so we go there when we get chance.
What has happened has made me realise how precious life is. I hope that I have had my fill. All that matters is my childrens health. I pray every night for that and if I get it, I will be a very happy mother.
Ive been resilient but I dont want to find out how much more resilient I can be. Im happy with Sean and my family and my life is what it should be. Its my time to enjoy it.
