VIP guests from the world of sport, media and business gathered at an exclusive dinner to launch a new private dining room at Mere Golf Resort and Spa.

The elegant Riley Room, at the newly refurbished hotel at Mere near Knutsford, is named after the famous Salford artist, Harold Riley, who was guest of honour at the occasion. The room showcases a collection of his art on permanent display.

After a champagne reception and lavish four-course dinner, Mr Riley addressed the guests and spoke of the importance of place when displaying paintings.

Of all the places that my works are displayed in, I think I like this place best, he said, glancing around at his art on the walls of the chic function room. He thanked Mark Boler, co-owner of The Mere, and colleagues, for putting his work on display so close to the city of Salford, the inspiration of many of his paintings.

The Riley Room also boasts several of the artists paintings inspired by sporting heroes.
