North Cheshire Photographic Society birthday celebrations

The North Cheshire Photographic Society marks a big birthday this year, but no-one knows exactly when
There will be a party in Poynton this year, but even those who will be organising it arent sure of the date. The North Cheshire Photographic Society was formed some time in 1951 but the precise date of their first meeting has been lost in the mists of time. In much clearer focus is the talent within the club today.
They now have more than 80 members and publicity secretary John Garner said: The society is open to members of all abilities but there are some who are really very good indeed.
John joined the society after he retired about six years ago and has since been joined at club meetings by his wife, Katie.
He added: The society started as the Hazlegrove Photographic Society and was founded by a group of people from the Mirrlees Blackstone engineering firm. The society celebrates its 60th anniversary this year but no-one is sure exactly when the anniversary is.
The early meetings were held in the civic hall in Hazlegrove, but
they moved and changed their name in the 1970s and we now meet at Poynton Civic Centre. The group has always been very active, right from its earliest days and we now have lots of members competitions, lectures and talks.
Photography has changed beyond measure since the society began and even since I have been a member, with the evolution of digital photography. The group has really embraced digital photography.
When I joined, people were still working on slides and prints but that is very rare now, things have moved at a tremendous pace.
As well as hosting regular talks and lectures, the society holds digital workshops to help members and non-members get the most from their camera. They also take their members on trips around the North West, and further afield - last years group holiday was to Venice and next month members will be off to Paris.
The North Cheshire Photographic Societys season runs from September, with Tuesday evening meetings at Poynton Civic Centre. They hold regular competitions and talks from guest experts. Visit their website - www.ncps.org.uk - to find out more
