Short Break - Gitcombe House Country Cottages, Devon

Gitcombe House has pretty rural views and charming beaches nearby. No wonder so many people from our county holiday here Review by Emma Mayoh

Flick through the visitors book at Gitcombe House and youll see that comments from Cheshire holidaymakers are a regular occurrence. People from across our county and North Wales heap praise on the facilities at this luxurious Devon bolthole.

Its easy to see why so many people are charmed by this country estate with luxurious self-catering cottages. Gitcombe House is in a beautiful valley just outside the pretty village of Cornworthy. A lovely coastline, including the popular Blackpool Sands and the picturesque town of Dartmouth, is nearby as well as the foodie haven of Totnes. Dartmoor National Park and its endless opportunities for walks among wild ponies and sheep is also within striking distance and on a clear day can be seen from several of the cottages.

It is run by Yve and Mike Cast. The couple, who had lived in Bristol for many years, had always enjoyed summer family holidays but craved more from the accommodation open to them.

Before they arrived at Gitcombe House, the buildings had been given a contemporary makeover. They then gave the grounds a huge overhaul, opening up the once densely tree-populated estate to make the most of fantastic views. They have also built on those stylish interiors and created eight self-catering cottages that provide a very comfortable home from home.

Families are very much catered for here - something that is important to Yve and Mike. The cottages sleep between two and eight people. Our home for the stay was The Hayloft, an addition introduced by the couple. This open plan loft-style barn is beautifully decorated and fitted out with contemporary appliances.

Its generally used by parents with small babies or as a tempting refuge for grandparents holidaying with their clan. It has lots of character and a balcony to enjoy those lovely views when the weather is good. Its kitted out with everything you need and plenty extra.

There are lots of countryside walks to be enjoyed from Gitcombe House but if you dont want to venture far there are indoor and outdoor poola, a sauna and steam room and an outdoor Jacuzzi with views you could spend all day gazing at. There is also a tennis court if youre feeling energetic and a childrens playground.

Many holidaymakers choose to have food delivered to their cottage. Several of the main supermarkets deliver here but we enjoyed a vegetable and meat box from Riverford Organic - providing us with one of the best breakfasts weve ever had.

We also enjoyed meals from Red Earth Kitchen - the sticky toffee pudding proving a particular favourite.

What Yve and Mike have created here is an idyllic all-year-round country retreat. Theyre now getting ready for the festive season all cottages come complete with a real Christmas tree. Little wonder Cheshire folk like it so much here.

A three night holiday at The Hayloft starts from 494 and a week starts at 650.
