I've always felt that an important part of being a business owner is how we invest a bit of ourselves into its success. One of my favourite quotes is by Dr. Seuss: 'There is no one alive who is youer than you.', Sure it's fun to say, but it's also very true.

Personal circumstances in my life have taught me great empathy and an 'outside the box' mentality. I understand that life can be short, our dreams can be big and that a business without strong values and aspects of ourselves is just not going to cut it in this world.

Making Business Personal

I'm a firm believer that a business without core values is meaningless. It's important to take time to reflect on your personal values and see how they align with your business model. Once you've set them, make sure everything you do reflects those values. You'll gain more trust from your customers. People will always buy people regardless of how big your business is, because values matter. Don't be afraid to be you.

If you want to convert more business, you must be willing to incorporate your core values in everything you do. Without them, your business has no foundation. Underneath it all, your customers and clients want to invest in what you've built.

Practicing What I Preached

For years, I shied away from allowing anything personal to interfere with the day to day running of my business. I wanted to be judged on my abilities and not my shortfalls (literally, I'm 4ft9in). At the age of two, I was diagnosed with Kyphoscoliosis and told that I would be unlikely to walk or have a good quality of life. While I never let this diagnosis hinder me in any of my endeavours, it had never been something I openly discussed or shared, especially in a professional aspect.

As I approach 40, and my 12th year in business, I've come to realise that I don't feel the need to prove myself, and that it's important to embrace who I am and what I have to offer. I've been successful through my own efforts and diligence, for both myself and my clients. However, a large part of that diligence is due to my own desire to overcome obstacles - I had unknowingly been implementing personal aspects of myself into my business. When that aha! moment came along, I found a way to make sure that I was doing this and sharing it with my family, friends and colleagues… and this is also what I strive to do for every client that I have had the pleasure to work with.

Life has a way of throwing hurdles in our path, sometimes obstacles that seem too great to overcome. But we also now live in an era where we can map our own futures, go beyond expectations - and fit into our niches to make a difference. This is when we can most be proud of who we are, embrace our uniqueness and let our values shine through. In doing so, this is also how we are able to make our goals become achievements and bring success to our business.
