A black tie dinner at Chester Racecourse marked the 180th anniversary of the Cheshire Agricultural Society.

The occasion was also an opportunity for the Society to express gratitude to some of the many volunteer stewards whose loyal work is crucial to the success of the Royal Cheshire County Show.

Guests were greeted by the sound of bagpipes, courtesy of James Gray, Pipe Major of the Scots Guard Association, Manchester, as they entered the Pavilion and enjoyed a drinks reception before dinner. The delicious meal, by the use of locally sourced ingredients, was a fitting tribute to Cheshire’s farmers and producers, and was rounded off with a superb cheese board, produced by David Williams.

Members of the Williams family were among those who dedication to the Show was praised after the meal by Chairman Tony Garnett. He, along with President the Rt Rev Libby Lane, Bishop of Stockport, and Cheshire Life editor Louise Allen-Taylor (Lady Patroness) presented certificates to several exceptional volunteers.

The Cheshire Agricultural Society’s coveted Award of Merit 2018 was given to James Hague whose voluntary work spanning 30 years was described as exceptional. As a schoolboy he carried a breed board in the Grand Parade and then in 2005 stepped up to become Chief Steward for the Main Ring and was then elected onto the Council where he plays an active part. James is also involved in organising the trophy marquee.
