Send your man to a lingerie boutique for your perfect Christmas gift, writes Carl Nagaitis. And he’s not talking about the sexy black and red stuff

It’s a Christmas cracker of a development and one that could spare the blushes of every male preparing for the embarrassment of the annual Yuletide shopping trip for that most important gift of the year.

Businesswoman Claire Walton, owner of Secrets at Tarporley, the designer lingerie, swimwear, nightwear and hosiery store, has thrown down a challenge to men to find the Christmas presents that will really delight the special lady in their lives. She tells me that what every woman really wants for Christmas this year is loungewear or nightwear: something they can snuggle into that will make them feel feminine, sophisticated and elegant.

This is great news for sensitive men like me: a gift that is personal, shows thought and will be well-received but one that doesn’t involve me lingering over lingerie or blushing over basques!

‘Over the past year or so I’ve been speaking to women about the need for our men to take Christmas gift buying far more seriously,’ explained Claire, speaking from her stylish shop in Tarporley village. ‘There is widespread agreement that husbands and partners need to give purchases much more thought.

‘They want their other halves to think about what their partner would really want as a gift at this special time of year and take that extra step to make the gift more meaningful and wearable.

‘What about replacing those well-used but comfortable pieces of nightwear that most women tend to keep for far too long?’ suggests Claire. ‘I defy any lady to say that she doesn’t have a piece of nightwear that should have been thrown away years ago. When I ask them why they haven’t, they always say that it’s because they are ‘comfy’! These pieces become treasures that women love to lounge in when they are at home but would never wear in public.

‘After being on their feet all day, whether it’s been in the office, ferrying children to and from activities or enjoying some retail therapy, the first thing most women do when they reach the sanctuary of their own homes, is to kick off those heels and slip into something comfy.’

But let’s be honest, those well-used and ultra-comfortable treasures may make you feel ‘at home’ but they perhaps don’t look as fresh as they used to: colours fading, white not quite so bright and probably past their best. Certainly not something you should wear to answer the door! And, don’t think your other half doesn’t notice they are a little past their ‘sell by date’. According to Claire, many husbands and partners come to Secrets and plead with her to update their ladies’ sleepwear.

So, replacements for those ageing pyjamas, an up-grade of that snuggly robe or a beautiful piece of nightwear with a gorgeous pair of bedsocks could be the perfect candidates for the ideal Christmas gift.

‘Secrets do nightwear in many fabrics and for different occasions. We also do fun nightwear like animal print pjs and slippers. We call these the Twosies of Tarporley!’

So ladies, you have the perfect excuse for treating yourself to some new loungewear or nightwear – the man in your life has noticed that it’s time for a change. After all you wouldn’t want to see your loved one wearing the same striped pj’s his mother bought him 20 years ago!

Claire added: ‘My final piece of advice for male Christmas gift hunters is to give yourself enough time to find the ideal present for your other half. The search starts NOW!’

Claire’s top Christmas gifts include:

*A Feraud knitted robe for that cosy feeling when you are relaxing on those chilly winter evenings.

*Italian hosiery – Ccassic, high fashion or something more seductive.

*A Feraud nightdress in feminine print for timeless elegance.

*For a touch of luxury – Italian designer lingerie from Ambra in opulent colours.

*Plenty of stocking fillers – bed socks and slippers for the fun side of your better half.
