Bolsover Castle

An audience with Father Christmas awaits visitors to the Castle in December. He will be reciting tales of Christmases past at weekends in December up to and including 23rd – with timed slots throughout each weekend, pre-booking is essential on 0370 333 1181. The Castle also hosts a carol concert on Wednesday 19th December, sung by Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir in the stunning surroundings of the Riding School. Booking required.

Calke Abbey 

At Calke in South Derbyshire, discover 12 festive displays in a new family trail, telling stories from Calke’s past. As darkness falls, lanterns lead the way to the candle-lit church and the Pleasure Grounds dazzle with their festive lights. For a truly magical experience, enter the twinkling tunnels and huddle by the fire in the Entrance Hall. Calke’s Christmas experience is on Saturdays and Sundays in December up to and including 23rd. Casterne Hall

The historic home of Charles and Caroline Hurt, Casterne Hall opens its doors again this year for its famous Christmas Teas and Tours. Come and enjoy a glass of mulled wine, a tour of the house, fully and extravagantly decorated for the festive season, and a scrumptious tea in front of roaring fires. Dates remaining 

for 2018 are: 13th, 17th, 20th, 21st December at 3pm.

Chatsworth

Enter a Land of Make Believe at Chatsworth from 10th November to 6th January. In ‘Once Upon A Time’ scenes from classic tales have been woven throughout the House to create a storybook world. Arthur the dragon guards the overgrown North Entrance and those who creep past him will find Snow White in the Sculpture Gallery, Cinderella in the Chapel, The Snowman in the Vestibule and more recent favourites like James and the Giant Peach and Charlotte’s Web. Storytellers will roam the rooms and corridors, and as always there will be plenty of dressed Christmas trees along the route.

The popular Christmas market is on until 4th December, there’ll be family friendly Christmas Nativities in the farmyard (selected dates from 8th to 

23rd Dec) and Twilight 

Evenings in the house with a mince pie and live music (22nd Nov to 21st Dec).

Haddon Hall

Sleeping Beauty comes to Haddon this year as the Hall transformed into an enchanted forest of trees and toadstools and dusky roses, with a silken bed and a princess… all part of Once Upon A Time, created by designer, Julie Mellor and a team that loves Haddon with a passion, at 12pm and 2pm each day, there will be musical performances in the splendid surroundings of the Banqueting Hall. 

Candlelit tours, led by knowledgeable guides at twilight, will take place on 4th-6th, 13th-15th and 18th Dec.

Hardwick Hall  

The House is open Wednesday to Sunday from 24th November to 23rd December, where visitors can discover a sea of lights and magical scenes including snowmen as you arrive at the Hall. Santa’s sleigh will sit out in front of the South Terrace – perfect for a festive family photo – and there’s an advent trail to explore through the park and gardens.

Kedleston Hall

The decorations for the grand house at Kedleston this Christmas are inspired by the birds of Kedleston, with each Christmas tree inside the hall telling the story of a wonderful winged friend. Visitors will discover the beautiful birds of Kedleston – including robins, peacocks and owls – as they wander around the impressive state rooms.

There are also Christmas crafts to try, such as willow weaving and lantern making. Then there are winter walks outside and sherry and mince pie tours inside the house.

Lyme Park

Father Christmas will also be visiting Lyme Park, where the Chapel will be transformed into a festive space with decorations and rugs and cushions to sit on. Renishaw Hall 

Renishaw Hall’s owner, Alexandra Sitwell, will be opening her historic home and award-winning gardens once again this Christmas time for visitors to enjoy. The gardens will be open for winter walks, and guided tours of the historic Hall – where the house will be dressed for a traditional Christmas – are available daily at 1pm and 2.30pm (booking essential). Open from 29th Nov to 2nd Dec and 6th to 9th Dec.

Sudbury Hall & the National Trust museum of Childhood

Sudbury Hall celebrates a Regency Christmas this year with an insight into what a family Christmas for the Vernon’s was like. Staying true to the Regency period, officially dating from 1811 to 1820, the Hall will be decorated in genuine Regency fashion with oranges and lemons, traditional greenery and foliage and candles. Starting from 1st December, there will be Christmas craft days, activities and even Regency dances organised throughout the month. Tissington Hall and village

Visit Tissington and escape with Peter Pan to Neverland, complete with ticking Croc, the Jolly Roger pirate ship and naughty Tinkerbell. In the village you’ll find Herbert’s Fine English Tearooms for refreshments, the candle shop On a Wick, Edward’s Sweetshop and the newly opened Andrew Holmes Butchery.
