Ahoy there! If you sail along to Liverpool’s Albert Dock there’s one bar which picks up the nautical theme nicely.

The Smugglers Cove opened recently and is proving to be a popular venue. It’s the latest success story of the New World Pub Company, part of the Cheshire-based Living Ventures. They own several restaurants and bars in the county, including The Botanist in Alderley Edge, plus a string of venues in Manchester including The Alchemist and Oasthouse.

The Smugglers Cove features one of the largest bar rum collections in the world, as well as cocktails, craft beers and ales, Champagne and wine. Plus, there’s food inspired by the deli, rotisserie and barbecue and live music every night.

The Smugglers Cove stocks 151 premium and rare rums, so you can sample them in their rum cabinet, and nearly two-thirds of the selection originates from the home of rum, the Caribbean. The remaining third come from various distilleries in 12 countries from around the world.

Managing director, Chris Hill said: ‘Our most prized is the granddad of rums, from Jamaica the Appleton Estate 50 year old. This specialty, made in tribute to the 50 years of independence of Jamaica, is thought to be the oldest rum available today. Intense flavours of the varietal sugar cane balance the woodiness of tropical ageing, oak and subtle spice. The finish doesn’t get any longer than this.’ It’s £110 per shot!

But the Smugglers Cove also has rum-based cocktails from £5.95. Smugglers Cove takes its rum selection very seriously, offering tasting sessions hosted by their own ‘Rum Guru’
