Rupert Smith has just retired after a long career as a consultant paediatrician. Originally from London, he lives in Heaton Moor with his wife Jill, a professor of genetics, and their three grown-up children. Rupert is secretary of Sale FC Rugby Club and loves to dine out. Here are five of his favourite restaurants

Damson
113 Heaton Moor Road,
Stockport SK4 4HY.
Tel 0161 432 4666

We have a number of local food establishments,
of which Damson is the star restaurant. The food is of a consistently high standard of the French/English style. It is our go to restaurant and it always impresses our visitors.

Chez Nous
179 Marsland Road, Sale, M33 3ND
Tel 0161 969 1172

For a down-to-earth dining experience and a great family feel we like Chez Nous
FOOD & Drinrinrinkin Sale. The older rugby fraternity and their families often enjoy a quiet meal here.

Nutters
Edenfield Road, Norden,
Rochdale, OL12 7TT
Tel 01706 650167

This family-run restaurant, with chef Andrew Nutter at the helm, is set in a lovely 18th century manor house. The food here is very good indeed. It is spectacularly popular and therefore I would recommend going midweek. The taster menu is a good starting point. They will adjust the menu with no hassle for people with food allergies, without compromising on quality and style.

Cholmondeley Arms
Wrenbury Road, Malpas, SY14 8HN
Tel 01829 720300

The Cholmondeley Arms, Malpas, is a great example of what school can be! The refurbishment has resulted in a place with great atmosphere, which also has excellent real ales and tasty food, and good service. The seafood platter and the gourmet burgers are particular favourites.

Alma de Cuba
St Peters Church, Seel Street,
Liverpool L1 4BH
Tel 0151 702 7394

For a lovely time out, check out the Liverpool religious experience. Visit the cathedrals and then St Peters Church, otherwise known as Alma de Cuba in Liverpool One. At night it is busy and noisy but for lunch the atmosphere of the old church is predominant, making for a very relaxed and preferably long lunch with high quality Cuban-style food. n
