Venue: A manor house which in its 480 years, served as a convent and home to the Earls of Lucan.

Menu: This is strong on hearty British staples, but with a twist, like venison cottage pie. There’s also light bites and sandwiches. Among the dishes which really impressed us were a starter of black bream (£7.95) - nicely balanced with a smear of red pepper coulis, an olive tapenade and peppery cress. A main of cheese, potato and onion pie (£12.95) was a doorstop of a wedge - soft pastry, - along with seasonal greens, baby carrots and a juicy mustard gravy. Top dessert was bread and butter pud (£5.95) with apricot and clotted cream.

Decor and ambience: A warren of rooms with the feel of an historic manor. Tables outside have countryside views.

Service: Friendly, efficient.

Cost: Three courses for two people and a couple of drinks.would be around £70.
