Venue

Australasia is an uber-chic subterranean venue in Spinningfields. A futuristic glass pyramid houses stairs that take you down to the restaurant and bar. Decked out in furniture that wouldn’t look amiss in a contemporary restaurant on the Australian shores, this eaterie conveys a luxurious vibe. They describe their food as modern Australian cuisine that combines Pacific Rim flavours, underpinned by European cooking tradition.

Menu

Small plates are at the heart of the menu. We were recommended the Sliced Beef Fillet with sesame, sweet soy and red chilli (£22.50), which was deliciously seasoned and succulent, and the Soft Shell Crab tempura with courgette flowers (£12.50). My first time of trying crab, it was a taste revelation. Razor Sliced Cctopus with passionfruit and yuzu gel (£9.50) and Szechuan Salt and Pepper Beef Skewers (£9) also went down a treat. Dessert (all £7.50) is not to be missed here, with the Chocolate Dome an artistic delight (it melts as delectable salted caramel is poured over). Chocolate Soufflé with raspberry sorbet and chocolate sauce was a sumptuous end to an impressive meal.

Service

Attentive, but not over-bearing, and friendly

Cost

This dinner for two with a side of sweet potato and rosemary mash (£4) and two cocktails (not to be missed) came to £105. Australasia is perfect for a celebration or special occasion.
