Spa review - Rasul Mud, Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa

The unusual Mud Rasul is just one of several decadent pampering treatments at Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa
How does the thought of relaxing with your loved one in a warm, dark chamber, smearing on mud with skin benefitting properties appeal?
I have to admit, I was non-plussed at first but I took the plunge and can thoroughly recommend it.
The new Rasul Spa treatment at the Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa is of Middle Eastern origin. My companion was not my husband, but my colleague Jackie Allen, so it was a bit of a giggle for us rather than the sensuous experience it might be for a couple. Our therapist left us in our private Rasul chamber with a selection of mineral muds to smooth onto the body and face. We then sat and relaxed in the chamber while steam infusions and relaxing aromas were gently pumped in. Pores were opened and cleansed, tired muscles soothed and all worries about deadlines and targets fell away.
After 20 minutes’ relaxation a warm shower descended within the Rasul to gently wash away the mud, leaving our skin feeling soft and moisturised.
This treat (£65 per couple) came at the end of a pampering afternoon. Prior to the Rasul we’d sat around in the outdoor Jacuzzi for half an hour. The hot bubbling water and warm summer day were a pleasant combination.
Jackie had enjoyed her Lava Shells massage which she said had only one problem: ‘It’s too short. I’d like that to go on all day,’ she laughed.
My ESPA Enzyme facial (£80) began with a deep brush cleanse followed by an intense Enzyme Peel containing botanical extracts and pumpkin enzymes to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. Then a soothing massage using rose quartz crystals followed before the final touch - a mask containing seaweed extracts, Argan oil and menthol. My complexion looked softer, brighter and ‘plumped up’.
Then, feeling thoroughly revived and de-stressed we headed to our room. We could have spent more time in the well-appointed Spa (large swimming pool, sauna, the Snow Cave, hot tubs) but alas, our busy schedules did not permit it.
Thornton Hall has undergone a major refurbishment and our twin room was decorated in chic, comfortable style with a wide patio door overlooking the gardens where a happy couple and relatives were celebrating their wedding.
The Lawns Restaurant was the final stop on our overnight stay. The reputation of this elegant 3AA Rosette restaurant is spreading and it’s well-deserved. Our food was first class and the service, by young waiters and waitresses, was exemplary. We were struck by their knowledge and friendliness which enhanced our experience even further.
An overnight or weekend stay at Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa is a real tonic.
