Get out and about in the city with our best picks.

Visit an art gallery or museum

Liverpool has a wealth of art galleries and museums. From the stunning facades and fascinating interiors of the World Museum and Walker Art Gallery on William Brown Street, to the contemporary Liverpool Museum on the Pier Head and the modern muses inside the Tate, you could spend hours browsing the interesting exhibits the city has to offer. The International Slavery Museum on the Albert Dock also celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, so expect a packed programme of events.

Take a trip on the Mersey

Merseybeat band Gerry and the Pacemakers made the city’s ‘ferry cross the Mersey’ known worldwide, and now you can take the famous trip yourself. Mersey Ferries offer various cruise options, including the daily explorer river cruise to the Wirral and a ride on the colourful Dazzle Ferry, created by Sir Peter Blake as part of Liverpool’s First World War commemorations.

Shop ‘til you drop

You’ll find everything from designer brands, high street names and individual boutiques here in Liverpool. For shopping all under one roof, head to the multi-million pound Liverpool ONE complex, which includes many dining options and a cinema. For more independent stores take a walk up Bold Street and for high-end brands check out the Met Quarter.

Feast on food

There are so many fantastic restaurants offering cuisine from all over the world in Liverpool. Journey down Bold Street for your pick of everything from Indian street food at Mowgli, experience Japanese at Mister Miyagi and even sample Jamaican at Raggas. Castle Street is also making a name for itself as a foodie quarter; with restaurants including NYC inspired Neighbourhood, chic brunch at Castle St Townhouse and Bacaro’s authentic Italian.

Try an alternative night out

Liverpool is famed for its nightlife, but if you fancy a step away from the traditional bar scene there’s plenty to do. Why not go on a ghost tour with Shiverpool, who explore the city’s most famous locations revealing hidden histories and mysteries? Or unleash your competitive spirit with a 18-hole round at Ghetto Golf, or play bingo while waving glow sticks at Bongo’s Bingo in Camp and Furnace.

Get a breath of fresh of air

It’s not all about the bright lights and the city. Take a short bus journey to enjoy a walk around Sefton Park, complete with beautiful Palm House and lake, or explore Festival Gardens in Otterspool. There’s also the famous Iron Men at Crosby Beach or the National Trust Squirrel Reserve in Formby.

Experience a bird’s eye view

It’s hard to take in exactly what Liverpool has to offer by foot, that’s why we also recommend a bird’s eye view. The city’s Anglican Cathedral, the largest in the UK, stands 500ft above the River Mersey, meaning it has an excellent viewing platform atop its Vestey Tower. You can also look across the city from the top of St John’s Beacon or on board the Wheel of Liverpool at the Albert Dock.

Be entertained

Music is a part of Liverpool’s heart and soul, so you won’t find it difficult to catch a gig in the city. Whether it’s undiscovered talent at the Jacaranda or world-famous touring artists playing at the Echo Arena, there’s always something on. The buzzing theatre scene also means plenty of shows at the Empire Theatre, Liverpool Everyman, Royal Court and Playhouse. Of course, we can’t leave out football, where a match at Anfield or Goodison is quite an experience.

Buff up on Beatles Trivia

A trip to Liverpool would be incomplete without taking in some of the Beatles attractions and sites. The Beatles Story on the Albert Dock is the perfect place to start on the cultural and musical journey, before wandering down to the Cavern Club on Matthew Street. If you have time, catch a bus to Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, or take in the joint tour of Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road, the childhood homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Have fun at a festival

Throughout the year, Liverpool hosts a number of exciting festivals. To name a few: Threshold Festival of Music and Arts (March 31 – April 2), Liverpool Food and Drink Festival (April 15-16, September date TBC), Sound City (May 27-28), Africa Oye (June 17-18), Brazilica (July 14-16), Liverpool International Music Festival (July 20-23), Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia (September 22-23), Liverpool Comedy Festival (September 15 – October 1) and Liverpool Irish Festival (October 19-29).
