Chester is a busy city all year round, with packed programmes of cultural, historic, theatrical and artistic events held in venues across the city. These are 12 of the best on the diary for December.

Chester Christmas Market
More than 70 wooden chalets around Town Hall Square offering quality local and regional products including crafts, clothing, jewellery, giftware and local food and drink until December 21.

Chester Cathedral Christmas Tree Festival
The festival will run until January 3rd and will feature more than 40 Christmas trees, transforming the cathedral cloisters into astonishing tree-lined winter walkways.
And on December 5th Chester Cathedral will host a production of The Snowman accompanied by a live, 25-piece professional orchestra 12.15pm, 2.15pm and 7pm.

Lantern Magic at Chester Zoo
Journey through the Chester Zoo gardens, and follow the illuminated trail to find an incredible selection of animal lanterns. From December 4th-23rd

Peter Pan by Theatre in the Quarter
A new adaptation of Peter Pan by team who created last year's successful Alice production at  at Theatre in the Quarter from December 4th - January 9th. Tickets, costing from £10, from 0845 241 7868.

Santa Dash
Chester will be filled with Santa’s dashing through the streets to raise money for for two local charities: the Countess of Chester Hospital and the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. December 6th.

Dick Whittington
The classic tale of a young man and his cat on the road to fame and fortune at the Forum Studio Theatre from December 6th - 30th. for tickets call 01244 341296.

A Victorian Christmas, Grosvenor Mueum
Join Blast from the Past for some of your favourite carols (with song sheets provided) as well as some more obscure but no less beautiful festive songs from the 19th century. December 9th Tickets: £10, Concessions £8

Christmas Winter Watch Parade
A fun parade of skeletons, Christmas cooks, angels and devils as they celebrate the Winter solstice from 7-8pm on December 10th

Chester Cathedral Choir Carol Concert
A concert of Christmas carols, both old and new, sung by Chester Cathedral Choir. 12th & 19th December, 7.30pm Tickets £10-£17.50 Children £5

Saturnalia Parade
The parade starts at 7pm and will process along St John Street, Eastgate Street, Northgate Street, Town Hall Square, St Werburgh Street, Eastgate Street, The Cross, before finishing in Bridge Street. December 17th.

A Christmas Carol exhibition
Visit Chester Cathedral over the festive period to see exhibition scenes from the story of A Christmas Carol. 19th November - 3rd January
