One gift that actor, singer and ex Coronation Street star, Adam Rickitt will find under the Christmas tree this year is a pair of Superman socks. That’s because when he and his wife, ‘Good Morning Britain’ presenter Katy Fawcett, moved into their Knutsford home earlier this year, problems began to present themselves pretty quickly.

‘We fell in love with the house immediately. It’s a cottage built by the Tatton Estate for World War One widows and is full of charm and atmosphere. The neighbours couldn’t have been more welcoming and, just as importantly, Katy’s ear plugs worked: a fairly important consideration when you live near a flight path and you have to sleep during the day! But a couple of days later, we were talking colour schemes over a glass of wine, when I noticed that the laminate floor in the kitchen was buckling and damp patches were appearing on the wall. I can tell you that the wine glass was hastily put down,’ says Adam.

Adam, aged 38, who has renovated buildings both in the UK and in New Zealand, when he starred in the soap opera, ‘Shortland Street’ soon discovered that it was due to an ongoing problem with water under the garden decking.

Katy, aged 35, said: ‘We couldn’t get hold of an emergency plumber, so Adam had to go single handedly take up the decking, grapple with the drain cover and do a massive clean-up operation, all in the pouring rain. I helped by looking encouragingly from the window but he really did arrest the problem quickly and so, yes, he is Superman and he deserves those socks.’

Today, the decking has been replaced and the garden is once again a place of stylish tranquillity, much like the rest of the home. Adam has put his house renovating skills to good use by doing the wiring, skimming the walls and of course, decorating.

‘Well, we were both involved with choosing the décor’, says Adam. ‘We wanted a sumptuous sitting room and, as we both like Georgian style, wanted a colour that would reflect that, so we chose a lovey, intimate grey. It makes a fantastic back drop to our furnishings and is just right for cosy evenings in,’ says Adam.

Those cosy evenings are shared by the couple’s dog, Rufus, an Australian cattle dog, that Adam rescued when he lived in New Zealand. ‘Another reason why he deserves those Superman socks’ laughs Katy.

The three of them, because Rufus also insists on his share of the sofa, love to watch box sets or- and this might be something Rufus can’t do- curl up and read. ‘We both like to read and I especially like classic literature-one of the reasons that I was so pleased to be asked to play the lead role of Pip in a musical adaptation of Great Expectations, which takes place at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens. I understand the character of Pip but I’m far luckier than him: I met and married my one and only soul mate, just at a time when I had almost given up that that sort of love was for me. Unfortunately, playing him does mean that I will have to spend some time away from home this Christmas but Katy and I still determined to make it extra special. For a start, we’re going to have a real tree’ says Adam. Have they not had a real tree before?

‘No. We were married in December 2014, so then we were on honeymoon for that first Christmas and then, well, I’ve always looked on Cheshire as home and I wanted to wait until we were living here. Until now we were living in Warwickshire but you know, I was born in Cuddington and Cheshire has always been home to me’ explains Adam.

But what about Katy, who hails from North Yorkshire? ‘On a practical level, it is nearer to my parents than Warwickshire, as well as being convenient for both of us when it comes to travelling to work. Anyway, these days, I absolutely love the county almost as much as Adam,’ says Katy.

Adam, who had a place to study law at university before turning to acting, has always had a social conscience. In 2005, he was selected as a potential Conservative Party MP; even appearing on BBC’s ‘Question Time.’ These days he is much more involved with charity work and is currently devoting a great deal of time to promoting the NO NEVER EVER campaign, which he helped to set up and of which he is a patron.

‘It’s all about trying to stop online bullying. I think everyone is aware of how much harm it can cause. We need to think about how we can prevent it: whether that’s through making sure that on line providers use safeguards or educating parents and children about the ways in which they might try to protect themselves through videos and talks. In any event, as a society, it is something that we have to get to grips with and both Katy and I are passionate about it,’ says Adam.

When not campaigning, working or decorating, Knutsford is a perfect home for them: from discovering Mrs Gaskell to exploring the shops and, of course, they can’t wait for the local Christmas lights and carol services. As self-confessed foodies, one of the other things they enjoy is sampling the many local restaurants.

‘Yes, we’re eating our way through them which might seem surprising when I tell you that we both have food restrictions. Wheat isn’t great for Katy and I suffer from Ankylosing Spondylitis, so carbs are off the menu for me. Don’t run away with the idea though that we toy daintily with a plate of salad: we eat loads: I have been known to eat eight curries or twelve chicken thighs,’ laughs Adam.

Mind you, Adam does work it off either by helping out with his mother’s horses or by enjoying walks in the nearby countryside; although even there his mind turns to food and he can’t help collecting chestnuts to roast at home!

‘We’ll be making time to eat them in front of our real Christmas tree and I think that will be the start of one of our Cheshire Christmas traditions. We plan on making many more: after all, we’re home,’ says Adam.
