Why one Alsager couple’s business is a fizzing success

Over the past few years, Prosecco seems to have taken the world by storm. Avid drinkers feared a shortage of the bubbly drink in 2016 (which quickly subsided after the announcement of a bumper grape harvest) and according to market research company IRI, figures revealed that the UK drinks 2.5 times more prosecco than the drink’s native Italy – even though the price is twice as much per litre.

An Alsager One Cheshire company, Fancy Flutes, knows our love for the fizz better than most. The Alsager business, run by fiancées Alex Windsor and Sophie Andrews, hasve been busy supplying the country’s elite with prosecco and premium drinks through their unusual camper van mobile bar and Prosecco van hire.

‘It was a spur of the moment thing to start the business,’ explained Alex, who with Sophie launched the venture in April 2016. ‘We had been looking for something to run together for a while when we saw a Pprosecco van on Facebook. We thought – come on, let’s do it!’

Within three days the couple, who live in Alsager, had bought purchased a 1969 VW camper van, now nicknamed Pepe, and later added second van, Valentina, a three wheeled Piaggio Ape which was imported to the country just for them.

‘Bookings were being made before people had even seen the VW. The whole passion for prosecco had exploded and was more popular than ever before. It’s just something a bit different and adds an element of pizzazz to an event. Plus people love taking selfies in front of them! The funny thing was, I didn’t really know what prosecco was before I had met Sophie.’

Fancy Flutes provide their fully stocked, licensed bar vans for hire at private parties and festivals around the UK. They, and over the past nine months have even worked at a Premier League footballer’s party and been featured on the Real Housewives of Cheshire.

The duo’s success has inspired them to start up another business, www.eventsplanned.co.uk, a complete listing of vendors, suppliers , business and event organisers to help you plan any occasion. ‘It’s only early days, but we set it up as when we’re out with the vans people are always asking us who we know and recommending other business we have worked with. It just made sense.’
