VENUE

Airy modern fine-dining-but-informal restaurant close to Home arts complex in First Street - yet another new quarter of Manchester city centre. The Wood of the title is executive chef and owner Simon Wood, the Oldhamer who won MasterChef in 2015.

MENU

Modern British, fine dining but it’s bold, not prissy. Early birds can get a theatre menu at £22.50 for two courses, £27.50 for three. A starter of wild mushroom raviolo (£9.50) was full of herby, meaty, pleasingly complex tastes, and a mackerel starter (£9.50) featured moist fish, firm slivers of beetroot and goats’ curd. A main of duck (£24.50) had big chunks of juicy meat with hazelnut and plums making for a rustic fruit and nut confection. Another main teamed beautifully tasty chicken with hunks of juicy chorizo (£22), black olives and pimento. Pud of ‘rum and raisin’ (£7) was more about the accompanying pineapple - fresh and dehydrated. Superb!

DECOR AND AMBIENCE

Typical urbane modern Manc style. Try for one of the classy booth tables.

SERVICE

Excellent. Lovely staff who know their stuff.

COST

Two people, three courses plus wine on the à la carte would be upwards of £120, making that theatre menu look even better value.
