Restaurant review - San Carlo Fiorentina, Hale Barns

It’s not a typical San Carlo location (at the back of a hotel) but once through the modest entrance San Carlo glamour awaits: there’s a gorgeous bar area, all marble, glass and chrome, plus their staff piling on the charm. The dining room is styled to feel like an upmarket ristorante in Italy, and it does feel like that. We dined on a Thursday evening mid-August and it was packed with Hale’s finest.
Plenty to choose from. There’s a wide range of Italian fare, and as a fish lover, I was spoilt for choice. To start I had lobster and crab ravioli (£8.35) which took me back to the shores of Amalfi. The pasta was soft, thin and moreish. The creamy sauce, with wine, was superb. Happily, a similar sauce arrived with my mains of monkfish (£17.80) which was plainly cooked (as expected), served with French beans and seasoned sautee potatoes (£2.90). My friend enjoyed her Burrata starter (£8.35) another simple thing done well with subtle herbs here and there, as was her fresh salmon steak ( £15.70). We chose classic Italian desserts: tartufo bianco (£5.90) and coppa cioccolato (£5.65). No surprises, they were delightful.
Swift service from friendly and knowledgeable staff. In addition, somehow the male waiters made two women feel like belles of the ball. Sad isn’t it?
Three courses for two people with two small glasses of wine each and coffees, came to £115. That included a 10 per cent optional service charge which we chose to pay.
