Putting the spotlight on retailers whose business is an important part of community life
When Sydney Sexton launched Sextons Bakery in 1969, little did he know he would be creating a legacy for his family. Sydney, who comes from a long line of bakers, had worked for British Bakeries as well as Liverpool-based Sayers, then considered one of the best. But he then decided to strike out on his own and started the family business.
Sextons, in Eagle Brow in Lymm, as well as a shop in Penketh, is now owned and run by husband and wife team Phil and Sara Sexton – the fifth generation of the family. Phil who joined his dad’s business straight out of school always knew he wanted to work at the family firm.
As well as turning out superb baked goods and food, made using top quality local produce including from Sapling Farm in Lower Peover, Sextons also take pride in playing a large role in the local community. They have a workforce of 35 people.
‘We love the bakery and we love Lymm,’ said Phil. ‘Everything we do, we are thinking about making Lymm a great place and to support the local area.
‘We want to support the local economy in any way we can. We also donate thousands each year to local charities. People say we are the focal point of the community. And we’re very proud to be.’
